Every month I like to put together a collection of songs (a Monthly Mix) that I currently dig and or have caught my attention in one way or another. To download this as "one track", please follow the "Monthly Mix" link above. However, for individual tracks, I recommend searching out previous posts or using the Hype Machine. Thanks and enjoy.

Today's Dark Was The Night track is an older Grizzly Bear tune, "Service Bell," which has been reworked and features vocals by Feist. I also thought this quote (via Gorilla vs. Bear) was quite interesting, "Never thought one of the first songs I wrote over 4 years ago would get the Feist treatment..." from Ed Droste's Twitter page. Anyway, Dark Was The Night is out 02/17 via Red Hot/4AD and again, this is an amazing compilation, produced by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National, to benefit the Red Hot Organization's AIDS charity.

Standout Tracks:I Was Only Going Out / Summers / Harsh Words
Though I've been aware of Loney Dear for some time, I unfortunately have not started to pay attention until now. Vocally reminiscent of Jason Lytle or Midlake's Tim Smith, Emil Svanangen sings some lovely tunes that honestly are not as singer/songwriter folk inspired as I was expecting. Basically meaning most of the tunes have a little more of a pleasant electronic feel, for example in the opening track "Airport Surroundings." Anyway, Dear John is out today via Polyvinyl.

I basically enjoy any and everything that Mike Nau composes and I seem to have jumped onto the psych wave over the last year as well. Granted, most of these tunes aren't as upbeat as the old Page France material, but they are pretty soothing and fantastic. Paranoid Cocoon, is out today via Suicide Squeeze.

Ferraby Lionheart has a new tune, "Dear Corinne," streaming over on his Myspace page. Unfortunately, no news to report on a new album, however, I believe I read a few months ago that he was in Nashville recording. So one can only hope that something may be released this year.
Justin Veron aka Bon Iver had an interview, as well as a performance of "Creature Fear" and a cover of Feist's "The Park," posted today on the Australian radio show, Triple J. Check it out at the link below, along with the new EP, Blood Bank, out now via Jagjaguwar.
J. Tillman has posted a fantastic cover of the Low tune, "In The Drugs," over on his Myspace page. Check it out below, along with the new release, Vacilando Territory Blues, out now via Western Vinyl/Bella Union. I've also included the original version of this tune.
NYC Taper has shared a download of Animal Collective's Wednesday night performance at the Bowery Ballroom in New York. Check it out below, along with the setlist from last night's Chicago show at Metro. Also, if you have yet to hear, Avey Tare seemed to strain his voice and did not come out for the encore of the Panda Bear tune "Comfy In Nautica." Apparently the band have been forced to cancel their show in Los Angeles, due to Dave's (Avey Tare) illness. The new release, Merriweather Post Pavilion, is out now via Domino.

I am by no means a professional writer, nor do I strive to be. I am just a musician sharing info on bands that I enjoy, in a fairly simplistic way, with the hopes of you finding something new.
Posted mp3's are for sampling / promotional purposes only. If you enjoy what you hear, please consider purchasing an album or attending a show.
