Kimya Dawson "Loose Lips"

I just got back from seeing the movie Juno and the music of Kimya Dawson was a main feature. I've known of Kimya for awhile now and she basically reminds me of a female version of Jeffrey Lewis, which is not a bad thing. I have trouble describing music, but I'd say it is just very raw artistic storytelling that is slightly different from the norm. Anyway, have a listen, it's good.

Once The Movie

I finally watched the movie Once last night, which was just released on DVD last week. The film features two musicians as actors, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, who are in The Swell Season. Glen is also in the Irish rock band The Frames. Overall, the movie is a very simple story about two people in Ireland, a Dublin busker and an immigrant street vendor, that have instant chemistry and hint at falling in love. I highly recommend this flick.

Fionn Regan "Be Good Or Be Gone"

When I first heard Fionn Regan's record, The End Of History, a few months ago, I was instantly impressed. The first tune on the record is "Be Good Or Be Gone" and it is splendid. If you like simple folk music, along the lines of Damien Rice, then you will definitely enjoy this. I also just came across the video for this song and found it very interesting. Please take a look and have a listen.

Bon Iver "Lump Sum"

Wow, so I just listened to Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago for the first time and all I have to say is "Wow". This record is so good. Apparently it came out this year, but will officially be re-released on 2/19 via Jagjaguwar. According to Justin Vernon, the man behind Bon Iver (Pronounced: bohn eevair; French for "Good Winter"), this record wasn't planned, as he spent last winter in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin. To read a full bio, please go here.

Andrew Kettering aka [...] Your Eyes Darling "Strange Animals"

I'd like to consider Andrew Kettering a friend, since he grew up a town over from me, but to be honest we only know eachother through myspace. Over the past few years Andrew has recorded/released a ton of material, which has inspired my own musical endeavors a lot this year. Originally, Andrew was recording under the name Fold Your Eyes Darling, but as of late, has taken on some new names like: Deny, Try, Sold, and Provide Your Eyes Darling. I highly suggest that you head over to stage.fm to download 58 songs of Andrew's for free. I personally am a huge fan and enjoy just about every song. For some time now Andrew has been sporadically posting newer material on his myspace and I was lucky enough to be following along. However, if you'd like him to send you the file or a hard copy, he seems to be more than willing to send it your way. Please have a listen.

Miracle Fortress "Maybe Lately"

To be honest, I didn't start listening to Miracle Fortress until a few days ago and now that I have, I cannot stop. Their album, Five Roses, is a gem and will definitely be on my Favorite Albums of 2007 list. Graham Van Pelt, a Montreal-based multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, is the main man behind Miracle Fortress. One can definitely hint that there is a Brian Wilson (Beach Boys) influence/resemblance, which isn't a bad thing, however is it just me or has there been a lot of that lately. Anyway, please take a listen because it is definitely pleasing to the ears.

Making This Blog A Little More Exciting

I have made a goal for myself in the new, coming year to make this blog a little more exciting/unique. Hopefully most of you know that I am a singer/songwriter and that's my number one passion. Over the past year I have written/recorded a bunch of new songs and hope to continue that in the forthcoming year. A way that I thought of definitely being able to keep it going is to post a brand new song on this blog once a week. What do you think? I like the idea. More to come soon.

I originally was going to make a post about myself and make a sleepy mix because I do listen to a lot of my music as I fall asleep every night. However, I thought that might be too many songs, so you're better off just going here to download any song you want.

Julie Odell "Swiftly Sweep My Deep Sleep"

I came across Julie Odell's music today and enjoy it very much. She is a singer/pianist from Louisiana, but currently resides in Memphis. Her music kind of reminds me of a Regina Spektor meets a soft Eisley. I don't know, basically it's good and you should have a listen.

Occidental Brothers Dance Band International at Martyrs'

I first heard of the Occidental Brothers Dance Band International last year when I saw them open for Andrew Bird. I saw them again Friday night at Martyrs' and they are still fantastic. Their sound is a jazz meets traditional African music and if you like to dance, then this band is definitely for you.

Favorite Live Shows Of 2006 (Revisited)

I felt like posting this as well, if anyone cares. As I said in the last post I wasn't as able to attend as many shows while away at school due to location and lack of a car. In 2006 I only attended around 10 shows and here were the top 5:

05. Silversun Pickups + Page France at Schubas (08.13.06)

Was my first time seeing Page France, a band I've been obsessed with for some time. Great show indeed. Silversun Pickups were good too, but probably one of the loudest bands I've ever experienced. Honestly left early because they were so loud.

04. Anathallo + Page France + Ben And Bruno at Schubas (10.27.06)

Three solid bands and three solid sets.

03. Calexico + Jason Collett at the Metro (06.23.06)

Went for Jason Collett, but ended up seeing probably one of the most flawless performances ever, from Calexico.

02. Andrew Bird + Occidental Brothers at Logan Square Auditorium (11.25.06)

First time seeing Bird and it was as amazing as I had expected.

01. Wilco + Detholz at the Auditorium Theater (11.24.06)

Can't go wrong with seeing one of your favorites bands, especially from the second row.

Favorite Live Shows Of 2007

I attended around 25 shows this year, mostly by myself, which is more than usual because in years past I've been away at school. Now that I am done with school, I am more able to attend these shows, however I'm sure most of the other music bloggers out there attend a much larger number. Anyway, here is a list of my Favorite Shows of 2007:

15. Page France + Bishop Allen at Subterranean (08.09.07)

An overall good show.

14. St. Vincent + Jolie Holland at Schubas (01.23.07)

This was my first time seeing St. Vincent and Annie just blew me away. She's so good live. Although she was sick, Jolie was great, but seemed to play somewhat of an overly long set.

13. the 1900's + Drug Rug at the Empty Bottle (10.12.07)

This was the record release show for the 1900's new album Cold & Kind and it was definitely a fun show.

12. Page France + Margot & The Nuclear So & So's at Beat Kitchen (03.09.07)

This was my third time seeing Page France and first time as a 6 piece. Mike Nau and gang rocked it. Margot's set was great too, although everyone was about to pass out from heat exhaustion.

11. Great Lake Swimmers + Sean Hayes at Schubas (06.29.07)

Sean Hayes really impressed me and the Great Lake Swimmers set was lovely.

10. Ferraby Lionheart + the Brunettes + the Lucksmiths at Schubas (09.26.07)

I'd been listening to a lot of Ferraby over the summer and it was great to finally see him live. the Brunettes were fun and the Lucksmiths standing singer/drummer was pretty neat.

09. Broken Social Scene Present Kevin Drew’s Spirit If... at the Metro (11.03.07)

This was my first time seeing Broken Social Scene and it was great to see/hear them play for 2.5 hours, but to be honest, the dragged out banter was a little weird/unnecessary.

08. Okkervil River + Damien Jurado at Logan Square Auditorium (09.18.07)

Finally got to see Okkervil live and they were great. Damien was great too.

07. Vampire Weekend + Grand Ole Party at Schubas (12.11.07)

I'd been listening to a lot of Vampire Weekend a few weeks before this show and still can't stop listening to them. I expect big things in 2008. I was impressed with Grand Ole Party as well.

06. Regina Spektor + Arcade Fire + Spoon + Willy Mason at Austin City Limits (09.14.07)

I wasn't officially at this show, but I did watch it online. Regina's set blew me away, much better than her Coachella set. Arcade Fire & Spoon were amazing as always and Willy Mason's solo performance & duet w/ his mom was nice too.

05. Wilco + Dr. Dog at the Pritzker Pavilion (09.12.07)

Not my personal favorite Wilco show because I was pretty far back, but the weather was amazing and they played around 26 songs (a few I've never heard live). Dr. Dog's brief set was also pretty sweet.

04. Grizzly Bear + Beach House at Park West (10.10.07)

A very intimate concert with two great bands playing great music.

03. Beirut + Colleen + Alaksa In Winter at the Portage Theatre (10.04.07)

A strange, but nice venue with a packed crowd. Beirut live is amazing, go see them. Colleen was great too.

02. Feist + Grizzly Bear at the Vic (06.17.07)

You can't go wrong with Miss Leslie Feist, she's just pure amazing and although I missed most of Grizzly Bear's set, their sound in the Vic was breathtaking.

01. Midlake + St. Vincent at Schubas (02.14.07)

A well spent Valentine's Day, but would have been better if Annie Clark was my Valentine. Annie’s set unfortunately was very short, maybe 15 minutes, but it was amazing as usual. Midlake were flawless. So so good live and I loved the short films playing in the background for every song.

A Few Shows I’m Mad That I Missed

- Daniel Johnston at Lakeshore Theater
- Arcade Fire + Electrelane at the Chicago Theatre
- The Police at Wrigley Field
- Iron & Wine + The 1900s at the Pabst Theatre (Milwaukee)
- José González at Park West
- Bowerbirds + Papercuts at Schubas
- Menomena + Field Music at the Empty Bottle
- Dr. Dog + Apollo Sunshine at the Empty Bottle
- Battles + Caribou at the Metro
- Josh Ritter at Park West
- Sondre Lerche at Park West

Grand Ole Party "Insane"

Grand Ole Party opened for Vampire Weekend last night at Schubas and I was thoroughly impressed with their performance. I even picked up their new album, Humanimals, which apparently doesn't come out until 2/5. Kristin Gundred, the bands lead singer/drummer was definitely a sight to see, but guitarist John Paul Labno wasn't far behind with his very jazzy, melodic guitar hooks. If this band heads to your town, be sure to check them out.

Vampire Weekend at Schubas (12.11.07)

Vampire Weekend played a sold out show tonight at Schubas and it was great. To be honest, this was the first concert in awhile that I was actually pretty pumped to see because I've been listening to Vampire Weekend a lot lately. Perfect timing to hit up Chicago and they played every song. The opening band, Grand Ole Party, were pretty great as well.
