So I was excited to hear that Wilco will be playing SNL this week, but after watching the video below, I'm even more excited. Any predictions on what they'll play? I'm pulling for "Hate It Here" with horns.
From what I have heard last, recording for the new Coldplay album is finished, but final mixing and mastering are still in the works. Rolling Stone recently sat down with Chris Martin and crew to discuss some of the new tracks. The untitled forth album is scheduled to be released in May and is being produced by Brian Eno.
I can't get this new Grizzly Bear tune, "While You Wait For The Others," out of my head. Check out a video and mp3 from yesterday's performance on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. The latest EP, Friend, is out via Warp.
Beach House have a new video for "Heart Of Chambers," a tune off the new release, Devotion, out now via Carpark. Check it out below, along with an mp3. Also, remember that a Chicago show is coming up on March 26th at Schubas.
Kevin Drew has a new video for "Lucky Ones," a tune off the latest release, Spirit If..., out via Arts & Crafts. Check it out below, along with an mp3.
Jamie Lidell has shared another exclusive version of a tune, "Little Bit Of Feel Good," off his forthcoming release, Jim, out this spring via Warp. Check it out below.
Nicole Atkins has a brand new video for "Maybe Tonight," a tune off the latest release, Neptune City, out via Columbia/Red Ink. Check it out below, along with two mp3s. I had the honor of opening for her last night at Subterranean and it was definitely a good time.
Tonight's Wilco performance will broadcast live via their website. I will be listening and recording the setlist as the show goes on. If you are unaware, Wilco will be performing every song from their catalogue over a 5 night span residency at The Riv. From what I have gathered from listening, this is the setlist.

Wow, Andrew Bird again. Tonight was great. Not sure if I can say it is my all-time favorite Wilco performance, but it was pretty great and I did hear some of my favorites that I've never heard before, "Should've Been In Love,""I'm Always In Love,""Hesitating Beauty," etc. My only reasons for dislike were when people would stand in front of me, when everyone else was sitting, but not all of the time. Also, I didn't think the sound mix was that good, maybe it was just where I was sitting, but the drums and Andrew were quiet. I was in the balcony, which was good because I didn’t want to stand for 3 hours, however we ended up standing for most of it. So, yeah overall, a pretty great show. If you are unaware, Wilco will be performing every song from their catalogue over a 5 night span residency at The Riv. From what I have gathered at the show and from double checking with Via Chicago, this is the consensus on the setlist.

Rue Royale had their cd release show last night at Subterranean and they played the entire album from start to finish, plus an encore. Horse In The Sea and Kyle Andrews performed as well. Overall, the show was pretty darn good. Do yourself a favor and check out Rue Royale's brand new self-titled album, here.
Man oh man, horns again and an Andrew Bird appearance. What else is in store? If you are unaware, Wilco will be performing every song from their catalogue over a 5 night span residency at The Riv. From what I have gathered from Via Chicago this is the consensus on the setlist.

I just so happened to come across the myspace page of Natalie Prass today and I am really loving her tunes. Somewhat reminiscent of a Jenny Lewis meets Jolie Holland. The video below is a collaboration with Seth Wood, but head on over to her myspace or virb page to hear two more lovely tunes. Also, listen to an interview and a few songs on SMtv. A debut record is due sometime in early 2008.
Unfortunately I was only able to get tickets for one night of the residency, Monday, but I will keep you informed on what the setlists are each night. If you are unaware, Wilco will be performing every song from their catalogue over a 5 night span residency at The Riv. From what I have gathered from Via Chicago this is the consensus on the setlist and the show was just pure amazing, loud, and close to 3 hours.

Sam Beam aka Iron & Wine played a solo set tonight in Wheaton, IL at the Edman Memorial Chapel. It was my first time seeing him play live and it was great. It was my first time seeing him play live and it was great, however I have watched live sets online from Lollapolooza, last year, and a few weeks ago over on the Fabchannel. Anyways, Sam is definitely a delight, oh and he finally cut his hair. I especially like when he messes up and laughs about it, great stage presence. Also, since we were in a chapel, they had asked him to refrain from swearing, so he told us to be creative in the parts where he'd pause. Overall, I'm sure this show will rank high on my "favorite shows of 2008" list.

Is it just me, or are The Dodos getting a lot attention as of late. I'm glad I caught on a few weeks ago because they are great and I am lucky enough to be opening for them when the head to Chicago in April. Ferraby Lionheart and his latest album, Catch The Brass Ring, out via Nettwerk, in my opinion, are very underrated and I don't understand why. I think the man and his tunes are great. The album was number five on my "favorite albums of 2007" list. Anyway, I just read over on his website that he is planning a spring tour and has currently been putting music to a movie, a teen drama staring Anton Yelchin. Should be interesting. If you have yet to do so, check this man out and watch an interview, here.
So I have been in a Rhett Miller mood today and his album from 2002, The Instigator, has been on constant repeat. Such a good album. Here are a few of my favorites.
To be honest, I have never been a big fan of the Grammy's because I mostly don't care for most of the music up for nomination, however I decided to tune in this year. Some highlights include Kanye West's emotional performance in tribute to his mother's recent death. The Beatles/Across The Universe/Circus De Soleil performance was pretty sweet. Feist's performance wasn't bad either, but you could definitely tell she was nervous. I dig the backing horns in "1234," but I personally like the full band better. I am still a little unsure on Amy Winehouse's performance, it seemed slightly sloppy. A few unfortunate loses were Feist for "Best New Artist"/"Best Female Pop Vocal Performance"/"Best Pop Vocal Album"/"Best Short Form Music Video", Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova for "Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For Motion Picture"/"Best Song Written For Motion Picture", Wilco for "Best Rock Album", Arcade Fire for "Best Alternative Music Album". To summarize the evening, Winehouse definitely cleaned house.
I was introduced to the Great Lake Swimmers by an art teacher I had in college. He referred to them as a "Canadian Iron & Wine" and since I am a big Iron & Wine fan, I knew I'd love them. I finally got to see Tony Dekker and gang live this past summer at Schubas and they were very delightful, as expected. Do yourself a favor, have a listen, see them live, or buy their latest release, Ongiara, out via Nettwerk. A very soothing/solid band that doesn't get enough credit for what they do.
Dr. Dog have a treat for us while they're in the studio making a new record, Passed Away Volume 1, which is an album of unreleased lo-fi songs recorded in various places over the last five years. Head on over to this site to stream it; however, it will be released on 2/19 via Park The Van.
Stereogum has shared another new tune, "Jodi," off The Dodos' forthcoming release, Visiter, out 3/18 via Frenchkiss. Check it out below, along with some upcoming tour dates.

According to this article, Coldplay are about a month away from finishing their new record that was rumored to be called, Prospekt. The band, however, has denied that claim, but the record is still tentatively scheduled to be released in May. I know many out there think this band is terrible, but I am proud to say that I think they are great. I am definitely looking forward to their new album, which is apparently being produced by Brian Eno.
It seems that my friends June have also decided to put the band on halt. This is pretty unfortunate since we go way back and come from a "scene" that I used to be a big part of. I don't know about you, but it seems like Victory Records doesn't really do much for their bands. Both Spitalfield and The Junior Varsity have recently call it quits as well, where those who went the Fueled By Ramen route (Fall Out Boy, The Hush Sound, The Academy Is...) are still going strong. Anyway, if you'd like to read a good, understanding letter of explanation from the band, please go here.
I unfortunately just read over on I Guess I'm Floating that The Format have decided to call it quits. Major bummer, but I'm sure glad that I got to see Sam and Nate perform as a duo, before they gained some of their much deserved popularity.
Sufjan Stevens has a new video for "Palm Sunday Tornado Hits Crystal Lake," which will be one of the thirty or so videos featured on the Encyclopedia Asthmatica Volume 1, a DVD compilation out 3/4 via Asthmatic Kitty. Check it out below, along with the tracklist, here. Also, I don't know about you, but I am anxiously awaiting a new release from the "states" project.
I discovered The Dodos today over on Brooklyn Vegan and really like what I hear. They are a drummer/vocalist and guitar/trombone/vocalist duo from San Francisco and are set to release a forthcoming album, Visiter, on 3/18 via Frenchkiss. From what I have read and watched over on YouTube, it seems like they put on a good live show. Looks like they'll be in Chicago on April 18th. I will be sure to check that out. You should do the same.
I am by no means a professional writer, nor do I strive to be. I am just a musician sharing info on bands that I enjoy, in a fairly simplistic way, with the hopes of you finding something new.
