More New Cotton Jones Basket Ride Tunes

Mike Nau of Page France has added a few new tunes to The Cotton Jones Basket Ride myspace page. Go there and have a listen. These new tunes were recorded at Kingdom Crumb with Whitney McGraw and one microphone. I'm definitely sensing a more eerie psychedelic vibe with Mike's newer tunes and I must say that I enjoy this direction he's taking. The new album, Paranoid Cocoon, is supposed to drop sometime this spring via Quite Scientific.

The Helio Sequence "Can't Say No"

I just discovered The Helio Sequence, a duo from Portland, over on Myspace and really dig the tunes. They have been around for quite awhile (10 years) and have a new record, Keep Your Eyes Ahead, out 1/29 via Sub Pop. Apparently, right after the bands last release, Love And Distance, in 2004, singer/guitarist Brandon Summers experienced some vocal chord damage. Now recovered, Summers and drummer/keyboardist Benjamin Weikel (former drummer of Modest Mouse) have put out a new, excellent record that I can already guarantee will be on my "favorite albums of 2008" list.

Feist "I Feel It All"

Feist has released a new video this week for the song "I Feel It All," which just so happens to be my favorite tune off her newest album, The Reminder, out via Cherry Tree, and actually the ringtone on my phone. I'm sure and hope most of you have heard of Miss Leslie Feist by now because she definitely blew up in 2007. I'm glad to say I've been following her for a few years now and she never disappoints. I was also lucky enough to finally see her live last summer with Grizzly Bear and it was one of my favorite live shows of 2007. I definitely suggest that you check out a live show or do some research on Youtube. Also, check out her sets (1 and 2) on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. I've included an early recording of "Intuition" from the first set.

Rue Royale "Tell Me When You Go"

My friends Rue Royale are about to release a brand new self-titled album, Rue Royale, and they have been nice enough to let us preview 3 new tracks over on their Myspace page. "Tell Me When You Go" and "On And On" are definitely my favorites so far. To give you a brief background, Rue Royale are husband and wife team, Brookln and Ruth Dekker. Brookln is originally from St. Louis while Ruth is from the UK and now their home base is Chicago where they have been creating music for 3 years. They will be playing a record release show at Subterranean on February 16th with Horse In The Sea and Kyle Andrews that I will definitely be at and you should as well. As for getting a hold of the new record you have 3 choices:


* PRE-ORDER the CD ($10+shipping) before February 16th (and go to record release show knowing all the words)

* Come out to the record release show at Subterranean on Feb. 16th ($10) (not knowing the words)

* Wait until it drops in late February, early March to purchase. (and regret the fact that you didn't make it to the show knowing - or not knowing - the words)

Cds will be shipped on February 10th.

Video: Matt Costa "Mr. Pitiful"

I do not recall when I started listening to Matt Costa, but it was probably when I heard "Cold December" for the first time. Matt's forthcoming release, Unfamiliar Faces, is out 1/22 via Brushfire. I have yet to give the record a thorough listen, but I do like the opening track, "Mister Pititful," a lot.

Video: The 1900s "Georgia"

The 1900s are a Chicago based psychedelic pop group with a sound similar to The Velvet Underground and Fleetwood Mac. I saw these guys live twice last year, including their record release show at the Empty Bottle, and just let me tell you that they are great live, definitely one of the better Chicago bands right now. Anyway, I noticed last night that they have posted a brand new video for "Georgia," a lovely tune off the latest release, Cold & Kind, out via Parasol. Check it out below, along with some mp3s.

Midlake "Tour of Denton, TX"

I came across this video awhile ago, so I'm not so sure how long it has been out, but Midlake take you on a small tour of their hometown, Denton, TX. If you have yet to hear Midlake, I highly suggest that you check them out. Their latest release, The Trials Of Van Occupanther, out via Bella Union, was #2 on my "favorite albums of 2006" list and their show, last Valentines Day at Schubas, was #1 on my "favorite live shows of 2007" list.
